Motorists with car insurance for young drivers 'have responsibilities'

People with car insurance for young drivers have been reminded of their responsibilities whenever they get behind the wheel of a car.

According to the Driving Instructors Association (DIA), young motorists are obliged to look after themselves and their passengers.

Steve Garrod, group manager at the DIA, added that this responsibility also extends to other road users, including pedestrians.

He was speaking after the body threw its weight behind Road Safety Week, which has been organised by charity group Brake.

Mr Garrod said the initiative, which commences on November 22nd 2010, should help to reduce the "unacceptable number" of people killed by motorists on British roads.

He added that many DIA members are currently engaged in voluntary work in colleges and schools to "emphasise to young people that driving is a lifelong skill".

This comes after Brake urged the government to take a "bold stance" when devising a new strategy to cut the number of fatalities on UK roads.
