Saga: People should save money into pensions

More people could end up using a pension calculator after Saga stated that people may not have enough money to fund their retirement.

According to Dr Ros Altmann, director-general of the Saga Group, the previous Labour administration "destroyed" the retirement savings culture in Britain.

This, she said, is because a number of policies that encouraged spending instead of saving have been put into place over the last decade.

Dr Altmann believes that this could have an impact on those who expect to rely on the state for support in later life.

"We have such a low state pension, so people are heading to a miserable old age unless we change things," she commented.

Dr Altmann added that the current "crisis" has been fuelled by the fact regulation has made it easier to borrow and harder to save.

She was speaking after the National Association of Pension Funds revealed that most people did not know if their employer had a pension scheme when they applied for their current job.
