Saga suggests retirement calculator alteration

The government could consider altering the way it calculates people's pension provision, according to a representative from Saga.

Director general of the organisation Dr Ros Altmann suggested older people's winter fuel allowance and other tax-free benefits could be incorporated into their state pensions.

She made this recommendation after concerns were raised over whether Prime Minister David Cameron might go back on his pledge not to take away certain benefits for older people.

Dr Altmann called for the politician to reassure the public that he stands by his comments from earlier in the year, when he gave his word he would protect such policies.

"Breaking his cast-iron commitment not to remove winter fuel allowances, free bus passes and other such benefits from pensioners, would enrage millions of pensioners," she added.

Meanwhile, head of communications at Saga Paul Green recently suggested older drivers should not be the only ones retested to keep their licences.

In his view, this type of exam should perhaps be carried out throughout a person's lifetime.
