Nationwide rep says there are good fixed rate mortgages on the market

Young people should look at what is on offer from lenders before they get too depressed about the state of the mortgage market, according to a source from Nationwide.

Martyn Dyson, head of mortgages at the firm, made his comments in response to research conducted on behalf of the company showing 21 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds believe they will not be able to purchase their first property until they are 40 or older.

He said: "The key message is don't be overly pessimistic. Look what offers are out there and look for help in terms of trying to get on the property market."

In his opinion, there are a lot of competitive deals available at the moment, with first-time buyers also benefiting from exemption from stamp duty.

Mr Dyson accepted that the days of getting a mortgage with a five per cent deposit are definitely over and it is a difficult time for homebuyers, but he suggested individuals may be more optimistic about their prospects after they have spoken to lenders.
