Savings accounts provider Santander highlights 'familiar story'

A representative from Santander described the decision by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to hold interest rates at 0.5 per cent as a "familiar story".

Chief economist at the company Barry Naisbitt said it is no surprise the organisation has chosen to leave the base rate as it is.

In his opinion, the minutes of the meeting will help enlighten commentators about how the MPC is feeling, with the UK economy still in a position of significant uncertainty.

He said: "As usual, the key to this month's decision will have been how the MPC judged the prospects for inflation and the economy generally."

Mr Naisbitt pointed out that the past few months has seen one member of the group vote for an increase in the base rate, while another called for quantitative easing to be upped.

The MPC announced the minutes of its November meeting will be available from 09:30 GMT on November 17th 2010.
