Calculate debt relief payments with a budget, urges moneymagpie.com

Consumers can work out how much money they can spare each month by making a simple budget, according to a source from moneymagpie.com.

Founder of the financial advice site Jasmine Birtles explained that it is usually money worries that provoke people to draw up their first budget, something that can be very useful.

"Just write down a list of payments that you have to make each month, add them up and take that away from the money that is coming in," she explained.

Ms Birtles pointed out that any money left at the end of this calculation is what people have available to spend on themselves or on paying off debts.

In her view, it is really up to the individual to decide how much money they are willing to live off of, but they can speak to a debt charity such as Citizens Advice Bureau if they need help.

This week, Ms Birtles stressed it is "major" problem for people to go into retirement with debts hanging over them.
