Moneymagpie.com calls for government advice on savings accounts

More advice should be handed out by the government to help people handle their finances, according to a source at moneymagpie.com.

Founder of the organisation Jasmine Birtles called for "serious" initiatives to be brought in across the country, as well as an increased focus on such issues during the education of children.

"One of the reasons why we are in such a terrible state debt wise is that we have ignored basic principles of money management," she said.

"We haven't been taught it in schools."

Ms Birtles accepted that the topic is now starting to receive more attention, but called for more to be done to ensure individuals are capable of looking after their financial situation and do not end up becoming a burden on the state.

Last week, the finance expert urged older people to avoid retiring with debts hanging over them, suggesting it is happening more and more as pensioners spend their money on their children and grandchildren.
