Planning is key to retirement calculator, says Aviva

The importance of planning pensions has been lauded by a senior source at Aviva, who noted that the earlier people begin looking at the issue, the better position they will put themselves in.

Clive Bolton, 'at retirement' director at the financial services provider, explained that anyone worried about their income when they finish their working lives should draw up a budget.

"People should make sure they have a clear idea of how much wealth they have tied up in all their assets including pensions, savings, investments and property," he said.

Mr Bolton pointed out that once consumers understand how much money they have coming in and going out they can begin to look at how they will remedy any negative situation.

In his opinion, early preparation is the most effective way of battling the expected increased cost of living in the coming years.

Last week, Mr Bolton claimed the removal of the default retirement age will allow consumers more freedom to design their own retirement plans.
