Watch out for frosting thefts, advises Sainsburys Finance

Sainsburys Finance has encouraged motorists to be wary of thieves who take advantage of the cold weather to carry out 'frosting' crimes.

Ben Tyte, head of car insurance at the company, explained that people may find they are not insured against this form of theft.

He said: "When it's freezing outside it can be tempting to leave the engine running to speed up the defrosting process while you nip back inside to finish getting ready."

But he claimed this leaves car owners vulnerable to opportunist thieves, with Sainsburys Finance estimating about 91,000 people annually over the past five years have fallen victim to this form of crime.

The firm pointed out that The Apprentice star Karren Brady recently had one of her family's cars stolen in this way.

It belonged to her husband, former footballer Paul Peschisolido, who now manages League Two side Burton Albion.

His Mercedes E Class was taken from their driveway, according to the Daily Mail.
