Halifax fixed rate mortgage 'flexible and competitive'

A new Halifax mortgage deal aimed at first-time buyers is the only agreement from a mainstream lender to offer no fees, the provider has claimed.

According to the financial firm, its new two-year no fees first-time buyer mortgage could save the average homeowner trying to get on the property ladder almost £2,000 in typical initial costs.

The bank pointed out that when taking out a first mortgage, most buyers are hit by a number of charges, including conveyancing costs, setting up fees and a valuation charge – add this to a product fee of around £995 and it is no wonder that so many people have trouble establishing themselves in the property market.

Halifax's new deal offers a two-year fixed rate of 5.79 per cent, a refunded valuation fee and no product, mortgage application or conveyancing fees.

The firm's recent First-Time Buyer Review revealed mortgage affordability for such customers is at its best level for some 12 years.
