Fixed rate mortgage applicants spoilt, says unbiased.co.uk

People currently have high expectations of the interest rates they can secure on fixed rate mortgages, according to research by unbiased.co.uk, with a source from the firm urging individuals to be reasonable.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of the company, made her remarks after the organisation found the average interest rate homeowners would be prepared to fix at would be three per cent.

She explained that the mortgage environment has been distorted by the low base rate and suggested people have "realistic" expectations so that they do not miss out on a good deal before interest rates begin to rise again.

Ms Barrett added: "It can be very confusing for homeowners to keep track of which is the best mortgage for them and when is the best time for them to move onto a new deal."

Last week, unbiased.co.uk revealed that the most searched-for topic on its website during 2010 was retirement planning, with mortgages finishing fourth.
