IMLA lauds advice of professionals when picking remortgage deals

Evidence indicating that intermediaries have played a key role in the UK mortgage market during the past year has been welcomed.

The Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA) was the source giving the praise, directed towards figures by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).

It revealed that lending via intermediaries accounted for 66 per cent of mortgage sales over the entire number of loans for 2010.

Peter Williams, executive director at IMLA, commented that 2010 "was a difficult year in terms of mortgage supply but, even so, mortgage intermediaries dominated the market in terms of sales".

He went on to predict that an equally strong performance could be had by the channel over the next 12 months, further aiding those seeking fixed rate mortgages.

Meanwhile, the CML recently found that mortgage lending has stabilised in 2010, with 529,300 loans advanced for house purchase during the year.
