Women may be at risk financially, says Bright Grey

Women could be putting themselves at risk financially by failing to buy adequate health insurance, it has been claimed.

Bright Grey carried out a survey and found that more than 84 per cent of women do not have critical illness health insurance, while 59 per cent have no life insurance.

Some 53 per cent of respondents said they think personal protection products are a luxury they cannot afford in the current economic climate, while 17 per cent thought they did not need such cover.

However, 11 per cent admitted they might take put a policy if they knew more about the products and what benefits they offered.

Bright Grey spokesperson Roger Edwards said it is worrying that women are failing to protect their income, even though they are the main breadwinners in many cases.

"Having protection in place gives peace of mind that women and their families will be financially secure if their income suddenly stopped because of a long-term illness or death," he added.

Earlier this month, Dr Ros Altmann from Saga said she thinks women will benefit most from the introduction of a universal basic state pension.
