Government criticised for breaking promise regarding pensions calculator

The UK's coalition government has come under fire from campaigners after its decision not to increase the state pension age for women until 2020.

Liberal Democrat MPs and pensioners' groups criticised the move following the current rise from 60 to 65 years old, Channel 4 News reports.

The new pensions bill will see the retirement age for both men and women increase to 65 by November 2018 - rather than the predicted 2024.

Changes to the age will result in 500,000 women having their pension age delayed by more than a year.

Director general of Saga Dr Ros Altmann told the news provider: "We accept that the pension age will have to rise, but it is the timing and the broken promise that we feel is unfair."

The organisation recently commented on Aviva research that revealed people aged under 21 years old are more likely to provide money to care for elderly relatives if they can afford it.

However, Saga argued that more familial carers were women over the age of 50, who will attempt to find a way of paying.
