TUC announces support for pensions calculator lobby

The Trades Union Congress has put forward its support for the lobby against the increase in the retirement age among women.

General secretary for the organisation Brendan Barber spoke out against the government's decision to bring forward the date for changing the age women qualify for a state pension.

Supporting the mass lobby of parliament organised by Age UK, Mr Barber addressed the potential finance problems caused by the increase.

The women affected could lose several thousand pounds and be forced to remain in employment for longer than they initially thought as part of the new government strategy.

Mr Barber said: "The government should go one step further and back down completely on plans to make both men and women wait until they are 66 before they can start drawing their state pension."

Women affected by the news are able to get involved with the protests by participating in Age UK's 'virtual lobby', in which they are advised to send an email to their local MP.
