Mortgage customers 'should hire financial advisor'

Prospective homeowners should hire a financial advisor in order to be well educated about all their available options, an expert has suggested.

Andy Pratt, chief operating officer for mortgage company Alexander Hall, addressed the need for specialised care for potential buyers due to the differing requirements of individual customers.

This news comes after lender John Charcol advised people looking for a new home to ignore the majority of short-term fixed-rate products.

Mr Pratt urged mortgage companies to offer customers "more innovative" deals in a bid to make the market more attractive for customers with differing financial situations.

He said: "It is not necessarily wrong [to avoid short-term fixed deals], but it should also be quite carefully balanced with the fact that clients have very different attitudes to risk and different requirements."

John Charcol recently reported a 15.1 per cent reduction in the number of people selecting a fixed-rate mortgage deal since February 2011.
