ATL speaks out against changes to Teachers' Pension Scheme

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has voiced its concerns over the alterations to the pension scheme.

Executive member of the ATL Mark Baker has criticised the government's plans to raise the retirement age to 68, claiming there had been a significant breach of trust.

This comes after the union started its first national strike ballot in retaliation to the plans, which have been received with anger by the majority of members.

If members vote in favour of a strike, 80,000 teachers and lecturers could refuse work unless the government takes action.

The organisation has predicted changes to public sector pensions could result in a 40 per cent reduction in the value of pensions for teachers.

Mr Baker said: "Teachers know full well they will never get to 68 years old in such demanding work.

"They will not be able to retain their engagement with their pupils nor maintain the physical and mental demands."
