Small businesses 'would recruit more staff if national insurance was reduced'

Small businesses would carry out measures to recruit more staff if the government reduced national insurance payments, according to new research.

Findings released by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) have revealed that companies would be likely to expand workforces if there was more certainty about the economy.

Conducted as part of the Voice of Small Business study, the research found that 31 per cent of respondents would take on more staff if national insurance payments were lowered for the initial six months of employment.

The FSB has urged the government to allow firms with up to four employees to extend the break in payments in a bid to allow economic growth.

John Walker, national chairman for the FSB, said: "It is not only imperative that the government creates an environment for job creation, but that the banks lend to small firms and businesses are paid on time."

Last month the FSB launched a review on compensation practices in the UK in a bid to assess the progress made by national authorities in implementing regulations.
