Public sector workers take action against pension cuts

Public sector workers across the UK are taking strike action today (June 30th) in a bid to highlight what they believe to be unfair cuts to their pensions.

One of the areas to be majorly affected by the planned strikes are schools in Wales, with up to 20,000 teachers taking part in the industrial action today, meaning roughly 1,000 schools have had to be closed.

In total, BBC News reports that up to 750,000 public sector employees are showing their concern at the government's planned austerity measures, with a third of schools in the UK and two-thirds of universities being affected.

Martin Johnson, deputy general secretary of ATL, the education union, said that if strikes are necessary it will mean a large number of students will be affected, but it is a price worth paying for improvements in the education sector in the future.

He added: "One day's disruption is preferable to long-term damage to the school system."
