Bank of England maintains bank rate at 0.5 per cent

Bank rates paid on commercial bank reserves have been maintained at 0.5 per cent by the Bank of England's monetary policy committee today (August 4th).

The move induced a mixed response from Santander and the Confederation of British Industry, however the Federation of Small Business argued the low rate would maintain the option for investment in less-sizeable enterprises and enable them to grow.

All three organisations indicated they believed the third financial quarter of 2011 would be as gloomy as the second, which saw stagnated growth at just 0.2 per cent.

Furthermore, with inflation still at 4.2 per cent, pensions and savings could still struggle to grow.

However, by contrast the sale of global assets, which many pension policies, Isas and investment funds are based upon, saw some of their highest records to date with strong returns in the international market in June.

Richard Saunders, chief executive at the Investment Management Association, said: "Our June figures show continuing strong inflows into funds.

"Though split pretty evenly across asset classes, there was particular appetite in June for funds in the global sector, which saw their highest monthly net retail sales on record."
