Current state of housing market 'encouraging'

Reports that show a rise in the number of new home registrations and sales are "encouraging", claims a new homes expert.

Steve Lees, director at SmartNewHomes.com - a website representing 85 per cent of new homes in the UK - said recent figures coupled with a wide range of deals and incentives now being offered were good news for the housing sector.

He said that initiatives like the FirstBuy scheme launched by the government in an effort to help new buyers "will help sustain industry activity and encourage new home sales".

Mr Lees added: "Annual growth in the number of new home sales is certainly encouraging."

The director's comments were based on evidence from Connells estate agency and the National House Building Council, with the latter recording a nine per cent increase in new home registrations over 2010.

Connells, in a separate study, recorded 18 per cent and 44 per cent more home sales for the first and second quarters of 2011 compared to the same periods last year.
