In a survey of its policyholders, the financial company noted that nearly half of respondents (45 per cent) rented - double that of policyholders who owned their own home (23 per cent).
Middlesex was the most popular area to rent, with nearly three times as many renters (51 per cent) than buyers (16 per cent), followed by East Sussex at 48 per cent and Berkshire and Surrey both at 46 per cent.
Carlos Thompson, the insurer's head of business development, said: "The impact of the recession on the value of properties has meant that some homeowners have opted to rent rather than sell, subsequently increasing the amount of supply in the lettings market."
With similar figures highlighting the surge in the rental market, Leeds Building Society announced today that its two-year discount buy-to-let mortgage has been reduced from 4.29 to 3.99 per cent, aiming to offer landlords greater choice and flexibility.
