Aviva reports substantial payouts for life insurance customers

Aviva's critical illness (CI) and life insurance customers received their share of a £212 million payout during the first half of 2011, the company has revealed.

The period saw 755 people receive CI payments during the six-month period - obtaining around £81,000 each - and representing a 21 per cent increase from the corresponding months in 2010.

In addition, the statistics saw Aviva pay £150 million through life insurance claims, with cancer remaining the most common cause of critical illness, followed by heart attack.

Robert Morrison, chief underwriter for Aviva, suggested that the recent figures should reassure customers that the company is prepared to help them through difficult periods.

"They can be confident that should the unexpected happen … we can help provide the financial support they require so they can concentrate on more important matters," he asserted.

Last month, the company revealed that increasing numbers of parents were questioning whether they can both afford to work as a result of the high cost of childcare.
