Being unaware of benefit entitlement is a 'common financial hardship'

People across the country could be living in financial hardship as a result of being unaware of their eligibility to claim a host of benefits, it has been revealed.

David Rodger, managing director of Debt Advice Foundation, said individuals struggling to manage their money might wish to consider contacting a financial adviser, as these individuals can offer a great deal of knowledge to help Brits to get their finances back on track.

He commented: "If they don't have enough [money] left over to meet their monthly credit commitments ... then it is worth checking that they're in receipt of their full benefit entitlement."

Mr Rodger added being unaware of eligibility for support is a common but avoidable hardship.

According to data compiled in the fifth annual Post Office Consumer Credit Report, 36 per cent of credit card holders - 12 million people across the UK - will spend the first month of 2012 relying on their credit cards simply to fund day-to-day living costs.
