Over that period they will spend more than £150,000 on the everyday running of their cars, Lloyds TSB Motor Insurance also found.
According to the research, Brits get increasingly attached to their vehicles the more time and money they spend on them.
Some of those who took part in the research said they became so attached to their cars that they would describe the relationship as love.
Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Motor Insurance, said: "There's no denying that the car has a very special place in our hearts. From childhood and throughout adulthood, our cars play a really important role in our lives."
