The reasons people take the risk of travelling uninsured have been listed by swifcover.com and the findings suggest that ignorance and misunderstandings are often to blame.
Many people surveyed said they thought they had cover elsewhere or they did not think they were likely to claim, some explained that they simply forgot while for others the expensive proved inhibitive.
Robin Reames, claims director at swiftcover.com, said: "British holidaymakers should think twice before travelling without adequate insurance."
"Travel insurance can be purchased quickly and with ease online," he added.
Car insurance is also available from swiftcover.com the UK's only 100 per cent online insurer.
