Parents urged to insure nursery build

Parents are being encouraged to take out a suitable insurance policy to cover the thousands of pounds they may spend on items for their young children.

Research from Halifax shows that new parents spend an average £2,628 kitting out their new arrivals' nursery – which is almost half the cost of a new Peugeot.

Expensive TV sets feature highly in kids' nurseries, with one in five children believed to have one in their nursery.

The group also cites a lack of budgetary planning as the reason why costs can soar on such a project, with over two-thirds of parents with children under the age of three not budgeting.

Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "The new baby boom is all about the amount parents are spending, to ensure their children start life in a luxury home nursery."

Parents with existing insurance policies are being encouraged to check its details to ensure they have adequate cover.
