With the nation's children becoming ever more excitable as the holiday season draws nearer, increasing numbers of parents are apparently turning to neighbouring properties to ensure presents go undisturbed.
The bizarre findings suggest that an incredible £946 million worth of presents have been hidden in other people's houses by some 13.7 million Christmas shoppers.
Among them, fewer than four out of ten said they had even considered the issue of insurance protection for such stowed-away items - while an estimated 147,000 continued with the practice even after finding out they were not covered.
"With 2.9 million people starting their Christmas shopping as early as January, some hiding places can amass a small fortune before they are finally given out as presents," cautioned Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey.
Recent research by the bank found that one in ten people start stockpiling Christmas gifts in the first half of the year.
