Nationwide insurance: Don't forget the garden this bank holiday

According to new research from Nationwide Insurance, a third of people surveyed value their garden contents at between £250 and £1,000, meaning it is important to ensure they are adequately insured.

The building society says claims for garden furniture and ornaments are among the most common ones it receives.

Nationwide's insurance director Robin Bailey said people may be dusting off lawnmowers and garden furniture this bank holiday weekend if the weather is good, but they may provide "easy pickings for opportunistic thieves and vandals" if they are left out for long periods of time.

He stressed that it is "really important that these items are adequately insured against acts of theft or vandalism".

Nationwide has come up with a number of tips for protecting garden items from thieves or vandals, such as investing in ground anchors which can be used to secure furniture and ornaments to the ground.

It also recommends that people do not leave tools lying around the garden, as they can be used to break into the house.

In other news, Nationwide announced yesterday that it was "disappointed" with the 2008-09 Budget.
