Branded rental scheme 'needs to be broad'

Government plans to incentivise large institutions to invest in accommodation may impact on the diversity of the private-rented sector, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has warned.

The organisation suggested that in order to ensure that vulnerable people are not considered "low-profit" and left out of the market, the scheme should cover the full range of investors in the sector.

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, asked: "Where is the evidence that large corporate investors are concerned about developing housing for the more vulnerable groups in society?"

"Encouraging a diverse UK rental market, including encouraging professional private landlords, will enable choice that will benefit consumers," he added.

The British Property Federation has suggested that a branded rental market could help solve Britain's housing affordability "crisis".
