Car insurance proposals welcomed

Drivers without car insurance could be set to face sterner policies following new measures proposed by the government.

The Department of Transport has revealed plans to crack down on drivers who do not have car insurance by fining them £100 and ordering them to insure their vehicles.

If, at a later date, it is discovered that the car has still not been covered, the owner faces losing their vehicle permanently, regardless of whether or not the initial fine has been paid.

To help it track down those who do not have insurance, the government will be collaborating with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

One firm to welcome the proposals was moneysupermarket.com, which said: "The new Department for Transport measures should help to drive premiums down in the future; making our roads a safer place and hopefully our pockets a little healthier too."
