Individual lending 'picks up slightly'

Figures released today by the Bank of England have revealed that lending to individuals in the UK, whether for mortgages or personal loans, picked up slightly in December compared to the figures for the previous month.

The bank found that the three-month annualised growth rate in individual lending increased by 0.2 per cent and both the total net lending to individuals and the total net lending secured on dwellings increased at a faster rate than they did in November.

However, the Bank said in a statement that compared to the previous year, before the credit crunch hit, the growth in lending was still slow.

It added: "The twelve-month growth rate [for personal loans] slowed further, to 3.6 per cent and the twelve-month growth rate [for mortgages also] slowed, to 3.4 per cent."

The slight upturn in the speed at which lending increased may indicate that the government's economic policies, aimed at persuading banks to lend to individuals, are having some effect.
