EHIC offers only basic cover says InsureandGo

People should be aware that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) only offers basic medical cover when you fall ill abroad, according to InsurandGo.

Perry Wilson, founder of the travel insurance provider, has advised people to be careful as the EHIC will get you basic medication for free, but anything more complex can cost you.

He pointed out that you will not receive any type of surgery by showing your EHIC unless you are in a life-threatening situation, so some accidents can end up being expensive without travel insurance.

"The EHIC card is for basic medical so they will get you out of bed as quickly as they can. It is not like National Health," he said.

Mr Wilson commented that hospitals in Europe are usually very strict on people taking up bed space.

InsureandGo recently reported that 14 per cent of Britons went abroad without insurance in 2008 and the total costs paid by uninsured travellers, for problems such as medical issues and lost possession, was £90 million.
