'Shortage' in buy-to-let mortgages continues

Landlords may be getting "frustrated" by the lack of buy-to-let finance available on the market, according to one industry expert.

John Heron, managing director of Paragon Mortgages, stressed that although the picture for the housing market appears to be improving, more steps need to be taken to strengthen the buy-to-let sector.

Mr Heron commented: "It is vital to the longer-term health of the private rented sector that the government considers this specialist market as well as the more politically attractive owner-occupied sector."

His comments come as Paragon Mortgages released its latest quarterly survey of landlords in the buy-to-let market.

The research found that landlords are expecting the value of their property portfolios to increase over the next 12 months, indicating that drops in house prices may have levelled off.

Over 90 per cent of respondents said that they intended to retain their investment properties in the fourth quarter of 2009, with 14 per cent aiming to expand their property portfolios while the market is depressed.

Research from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors released today may point towards a recovery in house prices as the lack of supply in the market is driving property values up.
