Car insurance costs 'put off young motorists'

The cost of car insurance is a barrier that prevents many young people getting on the road, according to gocompare.com.

It is estimated that, for many, the price of insurance alone makes up two fifths of the overall driving cost.

Parental financial help is the main method young people are using in order to help them to cover the cost of getting behind the wheel, as, in addition to 70 per cent of mums and dads who have contributed to the cost of lessons, 32 per cent have chipped in towards the cost of the car and 30 per cent have helped with the insurance costs.

With the average driver needing 22.3 lessons before they pass their test, classes at £24 an hour can mean costs of £536 - before the cost of the licence and test fees.

Lee Griffin from gocompare.com said: "While the initial costs are high, the best advice in the long run is to shop around for the best price for insurance in the young driver's own name."

Last month, the price comparison site urged drivers to shop around for cheaper insurance, following announcements from the AA that premiums have risen by £100 in the past 12 months.
