Aviva returns 'lost funds' to 5,500 customers

As part of the unclaimed assets campaign, the insurance company has passed the target it set in 2007 to reunite customer with £40 million by this year.
Customers who have been traced are set to receive an average of £1,000 each in their next letter from the company, from endowment policies which they took out in the 1980s.
In 2007, £2.5 million was given out to fishermen as part of the Find a Fisherman campaign, some of whom had pensions and life insurance schemes dating back to the 1950s.
Toby Strauss, chief operating officer at Aviva UK Life, said: "Unclaimed assets are common across the whole industry. People often lose track of insurance policies, particularly when moving house or job."
Many Aviva customers could receive a surprise in the form of inheritance, according to the firm. It was found in research this year that only 41 per cent of people expect to receive any inheritance, although 66 per cent of over-55s are planning on leaving money to loved ones.
