AEGON says pensions policy is more important than ever

AEGON pensions provider has suggested that the issue of the government helping people to put money away for retirement is of greater urgency now than it ever has been.

The company's UK chief executive, Otto Thoresen, said that "pensions policy is more important now than at any time before due to the pressures on the economy from an ageing population" and called for the 'pensions crunch' to be tackled to boost the country's fiscal stability.

Without action, he claimed that millions of people will suffer poverty in old age and will be forced to rely on the state for help.

His comments were made as AEGON research revealed 38 per cent of people believe pensions are a bigger issue in the upcoming general election than they were in the last vote five years ago.

In the latest Budget, it was confirmed that there will be no amendments to tax relief on pensions in the near future, which the company said was good news.
