British people 'unaware about overseas car insurance'

New figures have revealed the majority of British people are unaware if their car insurance covers driving abroad.

Moneysupermarket.com has urged drivers to check if their existing policies provide adequate cover for vehicles while overseas.

Findings showed that one-third of British motorists believe that fully comprehensive cover in the UK will also be provided for the rest of Europe.

However, the comparison website revealed that a number of providers downgrade policies to the bare minimum insurance required to drive in their holiday destination.

Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at Moneysupermarket, said: "No one wants their great motoring getaway to turn into an expensive nightmare, so motoring Brits should not assume their existing cover is valid when driving abroad."

The company recently offered several tips to newly qualified motorists who may be struggling to find affordable insurance policies.

Young males, who usually require the highest cover, were advised to add a named driver in a bid to reduce costs.
