Halifax Credit Cards: Christmas lists are changing

Children's most popular Christmas toys have gone from Rubik's Cubes in the eighties to Nintendo in the nineties and hi-tech handheld gadgets this year, Halifax Credit Cards said today.

"Gone are the days that children received a satsuma in their stocking, and listened to carols on the wireless," the bank said as it presented a survey over the last two decade's spending habits.

Simple gadgets such as the Rubik's Cube were gradually replaced by more technologically advanced toys in the last twenty years, where long-runners such as Barbie and Transformers appear among the must-haves.

This year, expensive Xboxes, iPods and DVD players have been on the top of the lists, causing financial concern for some parents, Halifax Credit Cards said.

Ian Corfield, head of Halifax card services, said: "Christmas has changed dramatically over the last few decades in terms of how we celebrate, our choice in music and the type of presents under the tree."

He added that a well-chosen credit card could help prevent a "financial hangover" in the New Year.
