According to the insurer, the increase in roadside speed cameras in recent years means that a quarter of all households now have a driver with at least one conviction for breaking the speed limit.
The company's survey reveals that, although one offence may not cause a premium to increase, subsequent instances of speeding will result in higher insurance costs in the majority of cases.
Some insurer's surveyed by the AA stated that they would rise a premium by as much as 24 per cent after one offence and 63 per cent for a second.
"There is a direct relationship between speed and insurance claims so insurers take speeding offences seriously," said Janet Pell, AA Car Insurance manager.
Ms Pell also warned that if any motorists who commit speeding offences do not inform their insurer, they could find their insurance invalidated if they have an accident.
AA Car Insurance claims that after searching its panel for the best deal for its customers, it will automatically offer the cheapest premium available at renewal, regardless of any previous offences.
The company also offers home, motorcycle and travel insurance.
