Home converters urged to 'take precautions'

Homeowners are being encouraged to make sure they are comprehensively covered when carrying out conversions on their homes.

Conversions are becoming an increasingly popular way for Britons to add value to their homes, with almost a third of homeowners carrying out work citing this as the reason for the undertaking.

A fifth of property owners are believed to have undertaken a conversion, with almost £90 billion having been spent making alterations to a home space.

AA Financial Services estimates that the average home spend on a project is £10,391, with attics, garages and sheds proving to be the most popular areas in the home for a makeover.

Janet Pell, head of home insurance at AA Home Insurance, said that when undertaking a conversion, homeowners should ensure they receive "the appropriate building regulations approval before going ahead".

She added: "And make sure you update your home insurance cover following an extension or conversion – your three-bed cottage might suddenly become a four-bed house – and of course, you'll have additional furniture and possessions, too."

For more information on an AA Financial Services Home Insurance package, consumers should telephone the group or visit its website.
