Simon Douglas, director of the financial services provider, said those who left renewing their documents to the last minute could "find there is a gap between expiry of their old policy and the database being updated".
The police draw their information from the Motor Insurance Database and motorists are at risk of being stopped if their details are not up to date.
Mr Douglas added he was disappointed in the delay of having electronic documents recognised as drawing up the legislation began in November 2007 and especially as many consumers have said they are happy to apply for their paperwork online.
The AA reported earlier this year that around one in 20 drivers are currently uninsured, with the police confiscating approximately 185,000 vehicles last year.
Paper documents are only needed as back up as all information is stored electronically. However, the postal strikes can cause delays for those trying to renew their insurance or car tax.
Drivers could also find themselves in difficulty if they are unable to produce the right documents when buying a new tax disc at the post office.
