HSBC and First Direct named top mortgage lenders

First Direct and HSBC have been named recommended mortgage lenders by a consumer watchdog.

Which? selected the companies by reviewing customer satisfaction scores as well as monitoring the best deals for people looking for mortgages.

Twenty-two mortgage lenders were reviewed by the company, with First Direct topping the satisfaction polls for the fifth consecutive year.

The company achieved 89 per cent for keeping borrowers happy, with Co-operative Bank coming in second place with 79 per cent.

HSBC was found to offer mortgage deals which featured most frequently in the top ten offers for the four-week period.

Head of personal financial services at HSBC Brendan Cook said: "This is testament to the ability of a prudently run bank to keep lending even in the midst of a financial crisis.

"It also demonstrates the care that my colleagues take to ensure that we lend responsibly and efficiently."

Co-operative Bank, Britannia, Nationwide Building Society and Yorkshire Building Society were also awarded the 'recommended provider' status.
