Debt advice is free for people who need it

Individuals struggling to manage their borrowings have been advised that free and impartial debt advice is available from the government and registered, reputable organisations should they need it.

David Rodger, managing director of registered UK debt charity Debt Advice Foundation, said anyone who feels their debts are getting out of hand should contact advisors before their situation spirals out of control.

He commented: "Registered debt charities such as ours, provide free and impartial advice, so individuals can find out what their options are and decide the best course of action for their particular financial situation."

According to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the licences of 62 debt management firms have been cancelled in the past year, after a crackdown on rogue operators.

The action comes after the OFT issued warnings to 129 firms last September. Others have been told to stop cold calling customers, or to stop pretending to be charities.
