Robust action on rogue debt management firms supported

Robust action taken by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in the revocation of 62 licenses for debt management firms across the UK over recent months is a step in the right direction for the industry, it has been claimed.

David Rodger, managing director of registered UK debt charity the Debt Advice Foundation, said the sector has received bad press and rightly so in the past, as a number of operators have pushed the boundaries of what is acceptable behaviour.

He commented: "The sheer number of licenses revoked over recent months by the OFT suggests that there has indeed been a significant problem within the industry, with large numbers of firms falling foul of the clear industry guidelines."

Indeed, the new debt management guidance currently being drafted aims to put an end to any exploitation within the industry.

According to recent comments by Mr Rodger, anyone facing debt management difficulties should always seek the advice of registered charities or government organisation, which will offer free and impartial counsel.
