Theft warning for students by Zurich Insurance

With thousands of students heading off to university this month, Zurich Insurance is reminding them of the need to protect themselves against theft.

Studies by Zurich Insurance show that many of today's new students will be unpacking over £3,000 of electrical items, such as TVs, DVD players, laptops and iPods, into their student digs.

But as well as all these gadgets, some will also have expensive clothes, kitchen equipment, CD collections and musical instruments.

Martin Hall of Zurich Insurance warns that many students could be leaving themselves vulnerable to huge financial losses if they fail to safeguard these possessions.

In order to help students reduce their risk of theft, Zurich Insurance has issued some important safety advice for those heading off to university.

Tips include making sure doors and windows are securely locked, marking valuable goods with an ultra-violet marker pen, keeping a list of makes, models and serial numbers for electronic items, and ensuring expensive possessions are not visible from the windows.

Above all, says Zurich Insurance, students should ensure they have adequate home insurance in place to protect them should they fall victim to theft or burglary.
