Legal & General discovers north-south divide

Those in London are more willing to splash their cash at the moment than people in the north of the UK, according to Legal & General.

It found that 31 per cent of residents in the capital were in the mood to spend, compared to only 21 per cent of people in the north.

However, living up to their reputation for frugality, northerners were more likely to be looking to save money than their southern compatriots.

They may have good reason to be squirreling money away - nearly one in five people in the north admitted to spending more on paying off bills and debts than they were bringing in, compared to six per cent in the south-west and 15 per cent in London.

Julia Clayworth, head of marketing at Legal & General's wealth management division, advised: "In times of financial uncertainty it is more important than ever for people to keep a close eye on their spending and budgets."

A survey released last week from moneysupermarket.com revealed that around 30 per cent of Brits are seriously concerned about their financial future.
