Barclays' pensions plans 'will be reconsidered'

Barclays has said that it will re-think its pension plans following protests sparked by the announcement last month that it will close its final salary pension scheme.

The bank has announced that it is considering enhancing its pensions fund after staff reacted angrily to its decision to close the scheme, the Guardian reports. The move was made in order to plug a £3.5 billion deficit, it revealed.

Discussions about the fate of the pensions fund have now entered their second month, chairman of Barclays Marcus Agius said, responding to the suggestion that directors' bonuses be added to it, informs the news provider.

A protest was staged by the workers' union Unite, which is set to hold a vote on whether employees should take industrial action over the issue in the future.

Barclays announced this week that its profits hit £2.98 billion during the half of 2009 - coming in slightly below the £3 billion plus predicted by analysts.
