Keep safe this Bonfire Night with tips from Confused.com

Bonfire Night can result in rocketing home insurance claims, so Confused.com has offered some tips on how to stay secure.

Home insurance claims were up by 240 per cent on Bonfire Night compared to the average in November, Tesco Home Insurance reported last year.

Bonfires and fireworks can cause severe damage, so the site advised to be sure to position them a safe distance from buildings and sheds. They should also keep them away from hedges that can catch on fire.

Thieves target houses when the owners are out watching displays, the site noted, recommending that people secure all doors and windows and set alarms before leaving their property.

When having guests around extra cover can help mitigate accidental damage costs and also provide peace of mind. Public liability is recommended if fireworks are being set off.

Animals can be scared by the loud noises, so people should keep them indoors and leave the TV or radio on when out as this can provide background noise to drown out the bangs.

Head of household insurance at confused.com Darren Black advised that adequate insurance is needed to ensure that "Bonfire Night does not burn a hole in pockets" after discovering that the insurance policy does not cover all eventualities.
