Saga describes women's pension decision as 'a cruel blow'

Saga has reacted angrily to a change in legislation which will allow women's pension age to increase by two years.

Following a debate in parliament this week, the coalition's proposals were passed, meaning that the rise will begin to come into effect in 2016.

Dr Ros Altmann from Saga said the news is a "cruel blow" to women in their fifties and urged the government to think again.

"In its coalition agreement, the government promised that the pension age for women would not start increasing before 2020," she pointed out.

The expert said Saga has already received letters from women who are "furious", particularly those who have already retired to look after elderly or infirm relatives or are too ill to work themselves.

Dr Altmann also said the government has not provided enough time for the changes to come into effect and added that many women are at a disadvantage because they took time out of their jobs to have children and were therefore not eligible for company pensions.

In January, it was announced that the default retirement age will definitely be phased out from April 6th 2011.
